Reflection

It’s a new day, a new year, can you believe it, 2008 and still no flying cars!

Last night I hung out with some of my closest friends and had a blast, we laughed so hard I felt I was going to get sick! We got to talking about how crazy it is that when we were kids that we were told in 1996 and 2000 we would have flying cars and we just had this unrealistic approach to the future. Hollywood warped out minds into believing this is what it would look like. I believe the best way to predict what the future may look like is to study trends from history. There is something about looking back that allows you to see clearer when you look forward. One must actually stop to look back if they would like to be successful in moving forward. I am not sure if you have ever tried to look back and walk forward at the same time, it’s not a good idea. When I was 18 I worked at this insurance agency with a friend of mine. We would talk all the time to make our days go by faster, we were friends and that is what friends do, talk. Well, his desk was at a corner on the way to the printer and I was talking to him as I was walking backwards, I turned around and boom! I saw nothing but stars. I split my head open on the corner of the wall, I had to go to the emergency room and get stitches and that scar remains on my forehead today (not really noticeable like I would like it to be, I think scars are cool!). My point is that looking back while trying to move forward at the same time doesn’t work, it makes a mess of things and we end up really walking a bad path where we bump into things. We must stop and look back in order to go forward effectively.

So, if you are not moving forward then you must be standing still or stopped…right? Oh no! This creates a problem in our fast paced society doesn’t it? How does sitting still look in your calendar, is there any room between the meeting at 4 and work out at 5 or how about lunch at noon and basketball game at 2? Does your calendar allow for stopping or sitting still? As we move into this year 2008 I think it is very important for us to look back at the past year (2007).
So is this about looking back or standing still? I think they are two in one. Maybe the best word to use is reflection…that’s pretty…pause…that’s righteous! Our lives move so fast with friends, family, school, relationships, children, and other responsibilities, that we often forget that God desires rest for us. God desires that we reflect on His Word and what is going on in our lives. So before you take a huge step forward this New Year, may you stop, pause, reflect on what last year was. What did God do for you, how did you see or feel Him?
